Media Convergence

Media convergence is becoming very popular these days. Media convergence is the combining of two different types of the amss media. Thsi is a great technique because it is very use ful and enertaining. Being able to watch your favorite tv shows on the internet is benefical for those who don't own a Tivo. Media companies are making a lot of money because people are watching vidoes with advertisments attached to them. The research firm, eMarketer forecasts a 45 percent gain in online video spending in 2009. this shows the sharp rise in video production for the web. Discovery is taking advantage of the media convergence between television and the internet. Discovery has countless footage of animal clips. Discovery's archive located in Sterling, Va., contains 1.3 million tapes of old episodes. So when the producer wants to clip something from from the tapes, the tape is taken to the editing center and a digital copy is created. Discovery allows you to watch certain shows from the netwrk. But they've been making profits by making video clips of animal attacks. I'm pretty sure for years to come, there willl be a lot of mass mediums combining.

  1. People sure do love those clips of animal attacks! I can't explain the appeal, but my father doesn't go a day without telling me about the grizzly demise of some poor antelope in excruciating detail! But seriously, more and more television/newspaper/magazine offerings are available on the internet every year. This summer, I watched part of the Olympics on television and the other part via the internet. I was able to read about my favorite athletes in magazines, with plenty of backup information on the internet. No wonder so many people just use their laptops for everything; newspapers can be read online, select articles from magazines are available and now a large variety of television shows can be viewed. Unfortunately, there's no escaping the commercials online, but advertising foots the bill.

  2. What an age we live in! Now we as society don't have to worry about missing our favorite programs if we have to work or go to school.

An example of what I mean: my mom, who is a big "Young and the Restless" fan was able to watch two episodes from last week that she missed because she was sleeping or working. In the past, the only way to see missed episodes were if they ran as reruns. This way everyone can get into their favorite shows more than they have in the past. Great post.

  3. You are right and media convergence has definitely taken over. Now a day it is unusual for companies to not be cross- media collaborated (converged). It opens up so many doors for companies to be intertwined together. I will say that there are still some very traditional newspapers that believe in PRINT and they believe in the idea of an actual newspaper. As well as our Professor Blade once said that he holds the New York Times to his chest tightly in the morning :) I believe that a lot of people feel that way…

  4. The social networking work is expanding at a rapid rate. Can you imagine there was a day when the computer did not exist? In todays world you can read (or watch) the news, talk to people around the world, write about your opinions, and even watch peoples bizzare habits on sites like you tube on a computer. The hand-held version to me was a big and popular breakthrough. The iphone is a computer and a phone all in a pretty, compact package at an affordable price. Through the years the mass media has become to me, the information station for everything and anything you could need. But for the record i still prefer a good paper with my morning coffee.

  5. Convergence is the hottest thing in the media industry today. It is so much easier to go on your computer or use your phone to find information you need, instead of reading the newspaper. I agree with Carrie, "that there are still some traditional newspapers that beleive in the old fashion print." Even though there are many televison news room and newspapers that still look the same, as they did many years ago they all have Web sites. So despite the difficuties of merging journalistic cultures, convergence will be around for a long time.

  6. Media convergence definitly on the rise. The idea is to share costs and split the profit. as one media they recive more and more popularity, and a larger media base. The main media of today, is digital media. The computer sare taking the media by storm. All kinds of othe rmedia is converging wih the internet. Especially newspapers and the internet. You can find almost every artile in the newspaper online, sometime even before the paper comes out. Even in the nespoaper, there are links to websites on the internet to give the readers a visual through videos and pictures.
