The Football Game of the Year
If you missed the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Arizona Cardinals for the Super Bowl Sunday, then you missed an exciting game. According to Nielsen Media Research, the Super Bowl this past Sunday was the most watched Super Bowl in history. I was surprised to hear this because the Steelers were heavily favored to beat the Cardinals. That’s exactly how it started out. The Steelers were beating the Cardinals 20 to 7 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. I was about to turn my television off and go chill until the Cardinals fought back with everything they had. I believe the reason why this Super Bowl will be remembered for a long time is because of the big plays. Steelers’ James Harrison set the Super Bowl record for the longest play with his 100 yard interception return right before the half. Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald who has been a beast this postseason, scored twice. One was a jump ball between him and Ike Taylor. The other was a 64 yard catch and run touchdown that gave the Cardinals the lead with a little more than two minutes left on the clock. The most talked about play was made by Steelers’ Santonio Holmes. Holmes made a marvelous catch in the back of the endzone that won the game for the Steelers. With all the big plays that were made this game, I guess that I shouldn’t be surprised that this was the most watched Super Bowl ever.

That's a nice summary of the game's outstanding plays. I can't believe that the Super Bowl was actually exciting for two years in a row--it's typically a mismatch or a defensive standstill. But I find it interesting that this particular Super Bowl was watched by more people than any other. True, it was an awesome game, but some viewers might have given up on the whole thing, as you almost did, after the first quarter. But what kept people hanging in there? Was it Bruce Springsteen and the hope of a big halftime show? Were others waiting for the Troy Polamalu Coke commercial? I know I was waiting patiently for Larry Fitzgerald to finally get clear and make some catches. I was not disappointed.
ReplyDeleteWhat a game. First, you have Jennifer Hudson who sang the national anthem that set the tone for the game. After that the crowd was all excited, because she sang that song, which gave me goose bumps. The first two quarters belong to the Stellers, but during the postseason the Cardinals have always shown the ability to come back. They never gave up and always thought they would win the game. It has been a long time except for last year's Super Bowl, that there was so many spectacular plays. I give many accolade's to Larry Fitzgerald. Held down in the first half, but being the humble superstar that he is showed the world what he was made of. Yes, I would have to put this Super Bowl up there as one of the best ever.
ReplyDeleteEven though i did not get to watch the game, after reading your post, i feel as though i caught the highlights. The contents of that game is what makes a football game great. It seems obvious to favor the Steelers based on numbers but those Cardinal fans, supported a team who truley gave their all to try and win the game. I honestly was not to interested in watching the game because favored neither team. Now i'm dissapointed in myself that i missed one of the best Super Bowl games in history.
ReplyDeleteI missed the first quarter of the game because I had to work, but I was able to catch it on my satellite radio. It was a great game. Roethlisberger acted like Joe Montana 20 years ago in Miami when Montana hit John Taylor with 34 seconds left to beat Cincinatti 20-16. The last two super bowls were two of the greatest ever. I was disappointed in Springsteen's halftime show becuase he didn't play "Born in the USA" as his opening song, instead it was "tenth avenue freeze out". Awesome post. Hope for another great game next year.
ReplyDeleteThe super bowl was definilty one for the ages, but i heard that this years super bowl was the second in history of th emost watched. I heard that lasdt year was the the most watched, according to the 97.9 radio station. I definitly beleive your well researchedblog, over them. But on a lighter note the super bowl this was amazing, espoecially that winning ctach that gave the steelers the overall close of the game. when the cardinals made that touchdown with 49 seconds left I thought there was no hope for the steelers to make a coem back, but I guess I thought too soon. What made that pass so dramatic was the speech that the quarterback gave after the game directing towards the pass. He said that the corner receiver was his last option, and as soon as the ball left his hands he thought it was going to an interception. I totally agree that the game was a spectacular finish and an overall good time, for its viewers.
