Media Convergence on a Whole New Level

A lot of people like having the ability to watch their favorite television shows on the internet. But would people want to be able to surf the web on their television sets? Some industries are trying to find the technology to make this possible. While other industries such as Sony is against this new movement of media Convergence. "Consumers don’t want an Internet-like experience with their TVs, and we’re really not focused on bringing anything other than Internet video or widgets to our sets right now,” said Greg Belloni, a spokesman for Sony. I agree with the spokesman for a couple of reasons. One, when people come home from a long day, most people just want to relax and watch television with just a click of a button. Personally when I surf the web, it feels like work because the only time I really search the web is when I have a project or an assignment. Two, if you're able to access the internet on your television set than you're able to get viruses on your television set as well. People already get pissed when their cable goes out or if their satellite signal goes out. Just imagine if people start getting viruses on their televisions, it would be nothing but chaos. Finally, these televisions will be expensive because of it's capabilities. People will be better off buying a computer and a television seperately from each other. I know everybody isn't cheap like me but I'm sure that they will agree with me on this one.

  1. Most people are not computer literate so I don't think that very many people would like watching their favorite shows on the internet. With games and many other things to do on the net should be enough. We have become a lazy society by not reading enough, using computers, calculator's, cell phones, etc. has crippled this generation. Myself included, I have become more reliable on a lot of these things. I agree with Sony stick to the good old basics.

  2. I have an 89-year-old mother and a 94-year-old father who would probably love to surf the Internet on a nice, big television set they could see. Trouble is, they would have to learn a whole new set of technological skills, and I don't see much hope for that! But other than really old people with vision issues, what's the point of using a television to surf the net? To make it easier to sit in a soft chair and scarf down junk food while thinking of endless things to look up online? Aren't Americans lazy enough as it is? We all need to get outside more and relate to people face-to-face. And I agree with your "cheap" argument--I'm sure this would be one high-priced television!

  3. I agree with Wendy on this one. This story is linked to the blog I did last week(the one in regards to cable companies losing money because people can watch the same show on the internet for free). I really don't think it is a good idea to get internet on our tv sets. If that happens, we may never have to leave our houses again. We need to exercise more and interact with people. If we don't, we will lead sad lives. If viruses get on your tv, the set will be screwed up right? For the record, they already tried to get internet on the tv once before. The program was called WebTV. Great post otherwise!

  4. Heh. You're not cheap! And I agree. When I want to watch the television, I'll get my lazy buns up from my computer chair and hop on the couch, but that's a rarity even for me.

I don't watch too much television. I watch a ton of films and documentaries, but generally, I get my daily dose of exercise. = )

    Great post!

  5. I agree, but i know alot of people who would disagree. Digital television is great. With just one remote, you can access any of your favorite channels or shows with a click of a button. Also, the DVR was one of the best electronic cable inventions i have experienced. How much better can it get when you can record any of your favorite shows and watch them at your convienance, skipping through advertisments and commercials. Some wealthy people might really love such a technology where they can do everything with one electronic device.I on the other hand agree with Greg Belloni.
